The City of Oakwood, along with thousands of local governments and public safety agencies across the country, uses an external communication service called OnSolve CodeRED to send emergency alerts. In mid-November, CodeRED was taken offline while the company investigated a security breach. Although the City contracts with CodeRED, we do not have access to its database and have very limited involvement in its internal operations. Still, we want to share the most up-to-date information we have with our residents.
What happened?
OnSolve CodeRED experienced a targeted cyberattack carried out by an organized cybercriminal group.
Whose information is stored in CodeRED?
- Residential landline numbers are automatically included and receive CodeRED alerts.
- Businesses and individuals who wish to receive alerts on a cell phone must register directly with CodeRED.
Was my data affected?
We were recently informed that attackers removed data from the system, including contact information of CodeRED users. This may include:
- Names
- Addresses
- Email addresses
- Phone numbers
- Passwords associated with CodeRED user profiles
If you use the same password for CodeRED and other personal or business accounts, you should change those passwords immediately. CodeRED accounts are currently inaccessible.
Does this affect 9-1-1 services?
No. CodeRED is completely separate from the systems used by the City to manage 9-1-1 calls.
What should you do now?
- Be aware that CodeRED will be offline for the near future.
- If you have questions, you may contact CodeRED directly at 866-939-0911, but please understand they are responding to an active incident.
