In the age of email and social media, the crime of identity theft is growing at an alarming rate and threatens most all of us.
Unfortunately, victims of identity theft don’t know that their personal information has been compromised until the damage has already been done. If you suspect that your identity has been stolen, it is important that you respond immediately. Here are a few tips to help get you started:
1. Call the companies where you know fraud occurred.
2. Review & place a fraud alert on your credit reports. You can place a fraud alert by contacting one (or all) of the three credit bureaus below:
3. Report the identity theft to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
- Complete the online form at https://www.identitytheft.gov/Assistant# or call 1-877-438-4338. It is important to include as many details as possible.
4. You may choose to file a report with your local police department. It is important that you provide the following information to local police:
- a copy of your FTC Identity Theft Report;
- a government-issued ID with a photo;
- proof of your address (mortgage statement, rental agreement, or utilities bill);
- any other proof you have of the theft (bills, IRS notices, etc.).
