With a small area of 2.2 square miles and a population of about 9,600 residents, Oakwood has a rich history as the residence of notable figures like aviator Orville Wright and National Cash Register founder John H. Patterson. The community values its past and aims to uphold the same principles and values that its founders envisioned. OAKWOOD’S FORM OF MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT
In 1931, Oakwood voters adopted a Municipal Charter, Home Rule, Council-Manager form of government. The five-member City Council is elected at-large on a nonpartisan basis for four-year staggered terms, with the Mayor and Vice Mayor being selected by their council colleagues every two years.
The City Manager is selected by and reports directly to the City Council. The elected officials set the overall direction and policy for the City, and the City Manager oversees all daily operations, acting as the city’s Chief Executive Officer. The Department Directors are appointed by the City Manager with the approval of the City Council. The City Manager also appoints and removes all other employees when necessary.
