As yard signs are increasingly being installed around the city of Oakwood, and with election season approaching, the city is receiving questions about sign regulations. Typical yard signs are classified as Temporary Signs under Title 12 of the Oakwood Zoning Code. Temporary Signs are permitted in residential zoning districts pursuant to the following restrictions:
- Individual signs shall be no greater than 6 square feet in area, and no greater than 4 feet in height;
- There is no limit to the number of temporary yard signs that may be placed in a yard, so long as the combined total surface area of the signs is no greater than 12 square feet. For example, a property may display four one sided signs that measure 18 inches x 24 inches; or three one sided signs that measure 24 inches x 24 inches; or two one sided signs that measure 24 inches x 36 inches. If two sided signs are displayed, the limits, for example, are two signs that measure 18 inches x 24 inches; or one sign that measures 24 inches x 36 inches. All sign faces visible from the public right-of-way are included in calculating the combined total surface area;
- There is no time duration limit on displaying temporary yard signs so long as signs are maintained in good condition.
Advertising/Commercial signs (e.g., window, roof or HVAC companies; plumbers; electricians, etc.) are prohibited as temporary yard signs in residential areas. Also, temporary yard signs are not permitted in the public right-of-way, such as in boulevards or in tree/curb lawn areas. To comply with the Oakwood Zoning Code, temporary yard signs must be placed on private property and away from street corners where they could block the view of oncoming traffic. Code Enforcement Officers will remove temporary yard signs placed within the right-of-way. If a temporary yard sign violates other regulations, Code Enforcement Officers will leave a yellow door tag at the property identifying the violation and requesting corrective action.
