Part 4: Trash, Yard Waste, and Curb Appeal

Some of the most common complaints we receive are about things that are easy to overlook—excessive trash, overflowing trash cans, overgrown grass, or debris piled at the curb. These may seem like small issues, but when they add up, they can have a big impact on how a neighborhood feels.

All trash should be contained in standard 35-gallon cans. Each home may use up to three cans, and lids are required. The only exception is for properties located on an alley, which must use a larger rolling waste can provided by the City. If you expect to have more trash than is permitted for routine collection, or if you have larger bulk items, contact Public Works to schedule a special pickup.

Yard waste should be placed just behind the curb and kept away from mailboxes, trees, and other obstructions. Please don’t pile branches, grass clippings, or other debris directly in the street—this can block storm drains and lead to cleanup issues.

During fall leaf season only, leaves may be placed in the street for curbside collection, following the posted schedule. All other yard waste should remain behind the curb. Putting materials out early or after your scheduled pickup week causes delays and can create safety and drainage problems.

Public Works also offers opportunities for residents to drop off yard debris. For details, check the city website or call the department directly.

Another frequent issue is grass and weeds. Oakwood requires that lawns be kept under 8 inches, and noxious weeds must be removed. This isn’t just about looks—it’s also about keeping pests away and avoiding fire hazards during dry weather.

When it comes to curb appeal, a well-maintained property helps lift the entire block. A tidy lawn, trimmed hedges, and repaired steps or sidewalks go a long way in preserving the charm and value of Oakwood neighborhoods. Trees and bushes should also be trimmed to maintain safe clearance—branches must hang no lower than 8 feet above sidewalks and 14 feet above streets or alleys.
