Part 5: How Code Enforcement Works—Reporting Concerns and Resolving Issues
Oakwood is dedicated to maintaining its neighborhoods as safe, clean, and attractive places to live. To do that, code enforcement plays an important role. But how does the process work, and what happens when a concern is reported?
First, it’s important to know that code enforcement is not about punishing people in violation, but rather helping residents keep their properties in line with city standards. Whether it’s a concern about an overgrown lawn, a building code issue, or something else, residents have the right to report problems. This can be done anonymously if you prefer, though we encourage open communication.
When a concern is reported, the city’s code enforcement officer will conduct an inspection. If a violation is found, the homeowner or property owner will typically receive a notice outlining the issue and giving a timeline for resolution. This could be a few days or several weeks, depending on the nature of the violation. In some cases, the city may offer assistance or resources to help resolve the issue.
The goal is always to work with the property owner to make corrections, not to issue fines. If the issue is not addressed within the provided time frame, further action may be taken, including fines or legal steps. However, these measures are always considered a last resort.
It’s also worth noting that code enforcement is primarily complaint-driven. If you see something that doesn’t seem right—whether it’s an unsafe structure or a violation of property standards—you’re encouraged to let us know. This helps the city address problems early and maintain the quality of our neighborhoods.
