The City of Oakwood is launching a new pilot program aimed at building community among senior residents. Beginning June 15, Oakwood residents aged 60 and older are invited to enjoy free evening access to Gardner Pool from 6 to 8 p.m. daily.

No pool membership is required—just bring proof of age and residency.

Swimming is optional. The goal is to create a relaxed outdoor space for seniors to connect, unwind, and enjoy summer evenings in good company.

City Manager Katie Smiddy said the idea came from conversations with new residents who moved to Oakwood to be closer to family but found it hard to build new friendships. “This is about creating opportunities for meaningful connection,” said Smiddy.

Mayor William Duncan added, “Our senior citizens are active contributors to Oakwood. This program is a small way to show appreciation and foster even more engagement.”

Whether it's swimming, reading poolside, or chatting with neighbors, seniors are encouraged to take part in whatever way feels right for them.
