Oakwood Teen Court
Oakwood operates a Teen Court that serves as an informal court to handle minor cases involving juveniles. The court was originally established in 1963 by the Oakwood Youth Commission, with the approval of the Montgomery County Juvenile Court. Minors under the age of eighteen who are charged with certain minor misdemeanors or traffic offenses, may be referred to this quasi-judicial body in lieu of formal prosecution through Montgomery County Juvenile Court. The youth and his/her parent(s) or guardian(s) are referred to an adult referee and a panel of teen peers. Juveniles sentenced by the Teen Court may be assigned to various work projects, restitution, license suspension, or other appropriate sanctions. Handling cases in this manner allows teens to maintain clean juvenile offense records and is an effective law enforcement mechanism for dealing with young first-time offenders. The Teen Court has been acknowledged throughout the region as an excellent tool in dealing with teenage offenders. For more information, please contact the Public Safety Department at (937) 298-2122.
